"Lacrimosa, a movement in the requiem mass, derives from the Latin word for weeping, lacrimatio. The photographs in Lacrimosa were taken during a two month sojourn in the 11th – century Italian village of Montottone , where Sara Angelucci family lived for generations. Angelucci was inspired to photograph the ceramic memorial portraits as they were lit night by small electric bulbs – keeping vigil in the darkness. As she writes, "I was struck by how it glowed like a small city; as the village went to sleep, the cemetery came awake." The tradition of ceramic grave portraits still thrives in Italy , as in many other countries. In her newest series of paintings, Zuger refers to her childhood drawings as source material for the imagery interposed into the abstract fields and biomorphic forms on her canvases. The cartoon-like drawn images subtly allude to their source, but are reinterpreted by a mature awareness of contemporary painting strategies. - Anna Frlan The source drawings recount stories and memories of my life at age 6, states Zuger. They are a prime start, very honest and ambitious. The painting then becomes very deliberate.Narratives bleed together, weave, and sometimes force their way into the composition. Soaked, the canvas preserves truth- painting as archive. Lanny Shereck’s In Between is a new series started as a search for in between spaces where people don’t tend to look. These spaces revealed a hidden world of garages, gardens, coach houses, fences and the flotsam of domestic life. Some of Shereck’s early work dealt with the theme of documenting individuals as they went about their business on the streets of Toronto; this new work is also a bit intrusive and odd. Shereck walks close to private homes, and takes pictures of these less public spaces; often experiencing the same discomfort he did when taking people’s photographs on the street without permission. & *** Gone Missing *** An Exhibition of compositions by Yvonne Singer. Yvonne Singer's exhibition Gone Missing is an installation consisting of 2 elements; a series of neon sentences and a video travelogue with images from Paris, Venice, Berlin and London. Through a series of sentence fragments produced in neon, and the flashing images of travel, Gone Missing suggests narratives of memory, loss and longing. The words produced in neon and the impressionistic wordless images of travel express the ephemeral and fragmented nature of memory. They allude to clues to an unrevealed mystery about personal identity. The use of neon to represent conversational language reflects Singer's interest in language and subjectivity. There is an inherent tension between the iconic postcard travel images, the familiarity of the neon sign as the language of advertising and the private thoughts suggested in Gone Missing. This exhibition brings together drawings and prints that, like her large scale sculptural installations, embody an expansive energy. Architectural elements and other diverse materials spill out, stretch and fold over beyond their two dimensional format. Jessica Stockholder was born in Seattle and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. She studied painting at the University of British Columbia and completed her BFA at the University of Victoria. She received an MFA from Yale University where she is now a professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Sculpture. Stockholder has exhibited throughout North America and Europe, most notably at the Venice Biennale; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Dia Centre for the Arts, New York; the Power Plant, Toronto; the Art Institute of Chicago; P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Centre, New York; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Her works are in various important collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. An Exhibition of works by Sara MacKillop. The work of British artist Sara MacKillop has been described as anti-heroic. Her materials are humble and expendable mass-produced objects typically found in junk shops or simply left out with the trash. Diminutive and utilitarian rather than remarkable in scale or character, these discarded items are recoded by MacKillop through slight but radical interventions that render the familiar enigmatic, even temporally unrecognizable. MacKillop’s deft manipulation of banal objects is performed with an astute sense of context and a keenly observant eye for formal detail. Her re-presentation of such objects affords them an abstract quality with an unexpected degree of visual pleasure for the viewer. They often bear an uncanny affinity with the clean-lined, reductive tendencies of art from the 1960s and 1970s. Indeed, the found objects favoured by MacKillop tend to be recently obsolete, such as typewriter ribbon or LP record sleeves once ubiquitous in the same period as the artistic movements her work may recall. Writing in the Top 10 section of Artforum last October, Ian Kiaer commented on MacKillop’s art: “the utmost economy produces exquisitely beautiful works that draw out modernism’s redundancy without falling into cynical or knowing commentary.
