Communication is a delicate process often overlooked and misunderstood. When speaking with one another face-to-face, more than just words are being communicated. A person’s tone of voice, facial expression and body language all contribute to how messages are being delivered/received between individuals. Once the method of communication changes, the context of messages also change. Therefore miscommunicating a message could alter someone’s day, or in a more extreme case, someone’s life. Our messages travel through space in this digital world, with minimal thought of potentially disastrous consequences. Influenced by the texts, Compulsive Beauty by Hal Foster, and One Place After Another by Miwon Kwon, this series connects the themes of location, identity and time. The notion that an event is time specific can be applied to people’s daily tribulations; hurtful words, secrets, lies, surprises, or any message has a meaning and time to be deciphered. Applying the concept of ‘A-destination’ from Kwon, a message received by the wrong recipient, shows how the context of a message changes based on the recipient. These moments of miscommunication and their consequences are captured in the series “I think this is for you…” For more info visit: www.launchprojects.ca . Till February 14 2010, Au 14 Fevrier 2010. Visually, these creations are comparable to intricate 'pop-ups', indeed, some works are deliberately engineered to possess 'pop-up'-like properties. However, origamic architecture tends to be cut out of a single sheet of paper, whereas most pop-ups involve two or more. To create a three-dimensional image out of a two-dimensional surface requires skill akin to that of an architect.. Coinciding with PARALLEL NIPPON: Contemporary Japanese Architecture 1996-2006 at Design Exchange, www.dx.org , 416 363 6121, 234 Bay St., Toronto Varieties of existing buildings of the world, from historical to contemporary, are included in this show. Queen St., W., & University Ave.. 160 Queen St., W., Toronto *** the luminous and richly textured effects *** textile artist and painter An Exhibition featuring compositions created by Stephanie Ford Forrester. Since returning full time to the art world in 1999, the visual experiences accumulated over years of travel, building, family, work, teaching and all the other wonderful and varied influences in one’s life are now being explored with renewed energy. I was blessed with a childhood spent on both coasts and the interior of this country, supportive parents who encouraged art, music and science and many wonderful opportunities to develop visual sensitivity in my growing years. As an adult, early travels in Europe, Afghanistan, India, unusual living experiences, hands-on log house reclamation projects, work in the museum field and an abiding love of the natural world have all combined to lead me forward in my work. Working by hand almost exclusively in raw silks and batiks is, for me, the way to obtain the luminous and richly textured effects present in my work. The immediacy and very personal quality of the hand work is a crucial part of the creative process. It speaks to me and to viewers in ways I find most intriguing. Mademoiselle Leach comments, " Since the summer of 2008 I have been playing around with making shaped works. I have looked at the work of Kenneth Noland, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Mangold, Ruth Root, Francine Savard, and the recent work of François Lacasse to name a few. I have also examined my own work to see how I can make shapes that reflect my aesthetic concerns and artistic identity. Concurrently, inspired by the large scale canvases displayed at the MoMA last winter, the work of Joan Miro has captured my attention, as well. Abstract Repeat: Circles and Shapes shows a body of work that incorporates the shapes into large format paintings applying that scale found in Miro. I have made an attempt to minimize the surface embellishment in an effort to simplify my ideas. For more info visit: www.angelaleach.com. This collection of emerging artists’ work explores the multifaceted realm of the human subject through deeply individual interpretations. This exhibition addresses the lives of specific individuals through documentary and self-investigation, as well as ways in which the human form conveys a broader message. In many cases, the human subject is not physically represented in these photographs. Instead, it is suggested through the objects we possess, the environments we have created, and the interruption of our thought processes. Till February 27, 2010 Au 27 Fevrier 2010. Like the recent Sunyata series of paintings, whose myriad colour and shimmering effect depends on light and angle of viewing, the Olympus series explores the evocative potential and physical presence of paint. In these paintings, fields of colour and painterly marks take on an heroic presence to evoke the drama of ancient Greek mythology. Their titles refer to specific events (such as the taking of Persephone to the underworld) yet the paintings mainly explore the sensation of pigment; relationships between colours (cool and warm); painted marks jutting out, jostling and grating against each other, and gentle undulations of surface that contrast with coarse, jagged edges. With expressive, archetypal use of colour (red and black suggests Hades, grey is both sombre and luminous), and wavy lines of brush and palette knife that create movement like static electricity, the Olympus paintings are chimerical allegories of the legends of the gods.
