Resonating with the same attention to a vibrant variety of perceptions and expressions, this show brings together a collection of work rooted in each artists’ current mind space; reflecting interests that were apparent one year ago, but present the product of each of their streams of evolution. Just as one grows into a compounded appreciation of something as time progresses, Falk, Frolov, and Weinmann emerge from relative isolation and bring with them work that demonstrates their own personal transformations. As young artists, the process of tuning and deciphering one’s visual vocabulary couldn’t be more dynamic. As a result, in this exhibition the artists aspire to bring a body of work embedded in more personal concerns, which is in contrast to the previous show. Last year, the artists were reacting more to the context and environment of the city of Toronto, where by this year in RE:MIX, the artists bring with them more subjective (and in some cases) abstracted outlooks on the elements of their present lives, their personal experiences, and the worlds that they have individually become attracted to over the past year. "RE:MIX presents an exciting exploration of rearranged, unexpected, exciting, and interesting personal inquisitions of our surroundings…it is our hope that those who visit the show will leave having had a visual experience that revitalizes how they may view and engage with the world on their own accord", explains Kristopher Weinmann. This new series of work has evolved into a new style for me of portraits of friends and family. I have had the opportunity to have sitting sessions with the subjects and have used some documentation working from my home. The process was spontaneous and the works have a rawness. All the works are on canvas using acrylic paint. A vast source of artists inspired me from Lucian Freud to David Hockney. There is a sense of time, "frozen", into the sitters' expressions. The use of vivid colours and patterns give the portraits a unique and refreshing aesthetic creating interesting results. Winter Garden was produced in 2009 under the curation of art critic Midori Matsui as a sequel to the exhibition The Door into Summer (Art Tower Mito, Japan, 2007). Winter Garden features 35 works—drawings, paintings, and video works — by 14 young Japanese artists active from the latter half of the 1990s throughout the first decade of the 21st century. The artists present their distinctive views of world through the combination of fragments, imbuing the obsolete or the commonplace with new functions or meaning. Eric Farache's exhibition of large format photography is an investigation into the convergence of time, image and memory through richly layered multiple exposures. Farache works with layered images all created in-camera, not digitally. Throughout Farache's practice, his work has consistently focused on the passage of time - capturing moments in history as well as place. Hemard scratches, paints, carves, prints, and sews each mood and experience through and onto her materials. Hemard scratches is a Toronto-based printmaker born in France, and has lived in Canada since the early nineties. She completed her MFA at Diplôme National Supérieur d'Arts Plastiques in France and has exhibited in Canada and internationally. Winter Garden was produced in 2009 under the curation of art critic Midori Matsui as a sequel to the exhibition The Door into Summer (Art Tower Mito, Japan, 2007). Winter Garden features 35 works—drawings, paintings, and video works — by 14 young Japanese artists active from the latter half of the 1990s throughout the first decade of the 21st century. The artists present their distinctive views of world through the combination of fragments, imbuing the obsolete or the commonplace with new functions or meaning.
