Within the last five years, online social networking and communication technologies have undergone a period of explosive growth. In light of the development of Web 2.0, communication, how we represent ourselves, and our sense of subjectivity have been profoundly modified. In response to these paradigmatic shifts, the artists included in Status Update investigate how and why we interface with technology, and what promises, failures, and desires might be at stake as we invest ourselves in these mediated and mediating relationships. Melanie Lowe's You Saw Me? (2008) and Cheryl Sourkes' BRB (Be Right Back) (2010), both invoke the gaze of the implied Other, the presence we imagine lurks behind the screen and lens, to which we offer ourselves in narcissistic identity formation and postmodern vulnerability. Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins' Presence Meter (2003) confronts viewers with the physical and symbiotic relationship to a technological body and the pleasurable affirmation of being recognized. Annie Onyi Cheung's Skype-based performance project NOW.LIMINAL (2008) and Robert Lendrum and Matthew Williamson's new media and performance-based work Avatar 2.0 (2010), generate interactive spaces for techno-social experimentation and observation. As each of these artists turn a questioning eye on our relationships to the technological trappings of the everyday, they uncover the basic and persistent human desires to escape isolation and to reach for a validating sense of connection. Auguststrasse 20, 10117 Berlin *** DEPARTURE SONGS *** - Thousands et/und Simultan - An Exhibition of the large-scale project by Kyungwoo Chun. Artist Talk with Herr/Monsieur Peter Friese: Thursday, April 29 2010, 5:30 PM/Jeudi 29 Avril 2010 17h30. In the exhibition DEPARTURE SONGS, gallery DNA shows recent works of Kyungwoo Chun, focussing on his project Thousands, which has previously been presented at Kunsthalle Emden, Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul and A Foundation Liverpool. Concurrently, Chun’s new series Simultan will be introduced. Korean artist Kyungwoo Chun who lives in Seoul and Bremen is known for his large-size portrait series characterized by blurred facial features and an almost painterly effect, achieved by extremely long exposure times. The artist’s use of photography and video counters our expectations towards these media: While his photographic portraits document longer periods of time, in his video works time seems to have been arrested. The blur resulting from long exposure times defies the notion of photography as an objective medium that catches a specific moment. These works capture the time spent, in dialogue or silence, between the artist and his model, confront the claim of preservation with the danger of disappearance, and dissolve the outside appearance to enable a glimpse of what’s inside. Most works in this exhibition are part of the large-scale project Thousands, which might be characterized as a venture of genealogical research. In times of globalization and individualism it reflects on historic roots and the relation of unity and diversity, thematizes emotions of pride and affiliation, and investigates migration as a socio-cultural phenomenon. The exhibition is completed by works from the series Simultan, which are presented to the public for the first time. Always arranged in diptychs, these photographs show groups of people in dialogue, taken simultaneously from two different perspectives and thus allowing for a twofold view on the same situation. Thus, these works thematize the often one-sided and selective perception of events and the distorting character of our memory. Till May 30, 2010 Au 30 Mai 2010.
