*** More Than Flesh: Embodiment of Abstraction ***

The University of Toronto Art Centre and the Master of Musem Studies
program present an exhibition on the embodiment of abstraction, featuring
works from the University of Toronto collection.

An Exhibition of projection-based work by Jean Bridge, Eldon Garnet,
Richard Gorman, Alex Javier, Deborah Koenker, Rick McCarthy,
Michael Merrill, Ron Martin
and Saul Williams.

As CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival recognizes the influence
of Marshall McLuhan on the 30th anniversary of his death, this
biographical exhibition hosted at the University of Toronto’s Art Centre’s
art lounge supports the adjoining The Brothel Without Walls exhibition
by examining Marshall McLuhan’s life and thought in relation
to photography. Utilizing archival material, this exhibit looks at McLuhan’s
reflections on the photographic medium, while examining representations
of this influential scholar in art and media.

Curated by Monsieur Valentine Moreno.

*** Cut to the Chase ***

- first solo exhibition in Toronto, Canada -

An Exhibition of paper collage by Greg Lamarche.

This veteran collagist channels the bold energy of graffiti and his experience of growing
up in New York City during the 1980's to create a unique style of hand cut paper collages.
Lamarche's work incorporates an array of typography to create original artworks that blurs
the line between graphic design and fine art. Each piece takes a painstakingly amount of time
to create as Lamarche strictly uses reclaimed vintage paper that is often collected years before
the final piece is created. The outcome is a dynamic pastiche that features abstracted letterforms, vibrant color, bold wit, and always fresh style. Greg Lamarche was born and raised in Queens and still resides in New York City.

- the art of acclaimed comic/sign/fine artist -

An Exhibition featuring compositions by Justin Green.

American artist Justin Green is known as "The Father of Autobiographical Comics".
He was born in 1945 and graduated with a painting major from the Rhode Island School
of Design in 1969. The following year he relocated to San Francisco, became one of the main contributors to the burgeoning Underground Cartooning movement and influenced artists like
Art Spiegelman and Bill Griffith. In addition to his self-penned anthologies, "Show and Tell,"
and "Sacred and Profane," he is best known for his exploration of the symbiotic relationship
between neurosis and Catholicism through "Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary".

*** 1985 (Part 1) ***

An Exhibition of an first installation by Nurit Basin.

For more info visit: http://nuritbasin.blogspot.com .

This is the first installation exhibit by Nurit Basin. After being devoted to the Volkwagen beetle in her artwork for the last 11 years, Basin has taken a courageous turn and is pleased to present an installation based on her bedroom in 1985.

There are two parts to this installation. One half of the gallery is the bedroom part: plush carpet flooring, duplicate prints of her drawings covering the walls and her original bedroom furniture. The soundtrack in the gallery is played directly from the original boom box and mixed tapes she recorded from the radio and TV in 1984 and 1985.

*** Moterwerks 8 ***

- Entropika -

An Exhibition of a new iconography by Andrew Bell.

Following 2007's Moterwerks 7: Mechanology, Bell's sophisticated portraiture pause,
the new works in Entropika are playful in their pop imagery. With taches of primary colour
and a tactical use of repetition, Bell's new iconography is imbued with the spirit of the cultural
icon of the pin-up girl.

As primary visuals, The Moterwerks 'Artwerks' are presented as historical icons -- mural relics from an alternate time. A fusion of propaganda imagery and mass media advertising, the result is reminiscent of both science fiction and antiquated past.

An Exhibition of a new paintings by Monica Tap.

Monica Tap has based her paintings of the last few years upon stills extracted
from low-resolution video, captured using the video feature on her digital still
camera. Her paintings are rooted in her experience as a commuter watching
the landscape whip by through the windows of buses, cars and trains.
Brushstrokes trace and amplify the pixels of the still, giving the impression
that the paint is pulled across the canvas by sheer speed. For this new body
of work Tap has added the ephemeral changes of the seasons to her
investigations of the fleeting moments of time and light.

*** The Shape of Memory ***

An Exhibition of a new paintings by Marija Barac Jandric.

Marija Barac Jandric’s work comes from observing the natural world. In her new series
of oil paintings titled The Shape of Memory, Jandric examines the relationship between memory and images of nature. Special interest is paid to the way in which the most elusive natural elements such as light, color, movement, and atmosphere, are tied to our deepest emotional experiences. Jandric applies layer upon layer of paint to her canvases, both transparent and opaque, with some shapes clearly defined while others are fused together or blurry. For her, this process mimics the way that memory is collected and deposited in our psyche. The resulting images evoke the feelings of a familiar place or a moment in time.

Marija Barac Jandric was born in Bosnia Herzegovina, moving to Canada in 1986. Marija graduated with honors from OCAD in 1996, she also holds a degree in Engineering from University of Zagreb, Croatia. Marija lives and works as a professional exhibiting artist, and art educator in Toronto.

*** Come Play With Us ***

- An Invitation To Our Horrors -

An Exhibition of compositions by Peter A. Barelkowski .

We do have a tendency to forget. History teaches nothing. Oblivious to its lessons, we are moving through the same nightmares again and again: year by year, century by century, millennium by millennium. Conveniently, we pretend that the horrors surrounding us are only a momentary aberration. As if they always happen to others and in the end, we will surely be alright. There is no hope as long as we keep forgetting how easily we entered into violence: became cruel, intolerant and self-righteous. Killing lies deep within our nature and we should never forget about it.

*** Death's Children ***

An Exhibition work by Mark Adair.

Mark Adair's Death's Children is a new series of small charcoal drawings that completes Death Drinks, a narrative about the adventures of Death in the modern world. Adair has worked on and off on the series for a decade and it has been exhibited in many shows in various stages of development. Both the subject matter and the labour intensive and detailed style of the work are inspired by the art of the difficult and dangerous 14th Century in western Europe.

&

*** Chocolate ***

An Exhibition of work by Mary Catherine Newcomb.

Mary Catherine Newcomb's spring exhibition at Loop features a 4' long reclining "chocolate" hare. The hare regards the viewer balefully and actually consists of a malleable material that smells slightly oily or rancid. A suspended oversized apple blossom crown that is made from copper, bronze and steel accompanies the rabbit. While heralding the beginning of spring, this exhibition juxtaposes ideas about beauty, illusion, consumption and our complex and often romantic relationship with nature.

An Exhibition of a compositions by Mircea Cantor, Trevor Gould,
Joshua Jensen-Nagle, Crystal Mowry
and Volker Seding.

NATURAL HISTORY presents works of contemporary art that revisit the history
of the development of museums and zoos, and the anthropological display of humans.
Inspired by the theatrical scope of the dioramas and monumental animal displays such
as those at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, each artwork

- Sound and Reflection, 2010 -

An Exhibition of compositions by David Urban.

"The world --our experience of the world-- is both real and abstract. I attempt to paint it that way."

- David Urban

David Urban has created a canvas of monumental proportions. In The Konokol: Sound and
Relfection
, he explores an Indian rhythmic system which employs an arrangement of syllables
to communicate rhythmic ideas. The triptych reflects a meditation on music, childhood and imagination, becoming a summation of previous thematic ideas pursued by the artist.

*** In Between ***

An Exhibition of compositions by Lanny Shereck.

Lanny Shereck’s In Between is a new series started as a search for in between spaces where people don’t tend to look. These spaces revealed a hidden world of garages, gardens, coach houses, fences and the flotsam of domestic life. Some of Shereck’s early work dealt with
the theme of documenting individuals as they went about their business on the streets of Toronto; this new work is also a bit intrusive and odd. Shereck walks close to private homes, and takes pictures of these less public spaces; often experiencing the same discomfort he did when taking people’s photographs on the street without permission.

*** Gone Missing ***

An Exhibition of compositions by Yvonne Singer.

Yvonne Singer's exhibition Gone Missing is an installation consisting of 2 elements; a series
of neon sentences and a video travelogue with images from Paris, Venice, Berlin and London.

Through a series of sentence fragments produced in neon, and the flashing images of travel,
Gone Missing suggests narratives of memory, loss and longing. The words produced in neon
and the impressionistic wordless images of travel express the ephemeral and fragmented nature
of memory. They allude to clues to an unrevealed mystery about personal identity. The use
of neon to represent conversational language reflects Singer's interest in language and subjectivity. There is an inherent tension between the iconic postcard travel images, the familiarity of the neon sign as the language of advertising and the private thoughts suggested in Gone Missing.

*** Status Update ***

- MVS Curatorial Studies Graduating -

An Exhibition of a compositions by Annie Onyi Cheung, Melanie Lowe, Robert Lendrum
and Matthew Williamson, Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins,
and Cheryl Sourkes.

Within the last five years, online social networking and communication technologies have
undergone a period of explosive growth. In light of the development of Web 2.0, communication, how we represent ourselves, and our sense of subjectivity have been profoundly modified. In response to these paradigmatic shifts, the artists included in Status Update investigate how and why we interface with technology, and what promises, failures, and desires might be at stake as we invest ourselves in these mediated and mediating relationships.

Melanie Lowe's You Saw Me? (2008) and Cheryl Sourkes' BRB (Be Right Back) (2010),
both invoke the gaze of the implied Other, the presence we imagine lurks behind the screen
and lens, to which we offer ourselves in narcissistic identity formation and postmodern vulnerability. Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins' Presence Meter (2003) confronts viewers with
the physical and symbiotic relationship to a technological body and the pleasurable affirmation
of being recognized. Annie Onyi Cheung's Skype-based performance project NOW.LIMINAL (2008) and Robert Lendrum and Matthew Williamson's new media and performance-based work Avatar 2.0 (2010), generate interactive spaces for techno-social experimentation and observation. As each of these artists turn a questioning eye on our relationships to the technological trappings of the everyday, they uncover the basic and persistent human desires to escape isolation
and to reach for a validating sense of connection.

Curated by Shauna Thompson.

*** Wild ***

An Exhibition of work by Wilma Needham.

Savannah Baboons are studied by primatologists to research the social behaviours that inform human relations and history. These digital images, conjuring up impressionist paintings, pose the fine art and craft tradition with the documentary. The images are an alternative to popular media, foregrounding a human stand-in, and investing meaning in the everyday life of a distant relative.

*** DEPARTURE SONGS ***

- Thousands et/und Simultan -

An Exhibition of the large-scale project by Kyungwoo Chun.

Artist Talk with Herr/Monsieur Peter Friese: Thursday, April 29 2010, 5:30 PM/Jeudi 29 Avril 2010 17h30.

In the exhibition DEPARTURE SONGS, gallery DNA shows recent works of Kyungwoo Chun, focussing on his project Thousands, which has previously been presented at Kunsthalle Emden, Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul and A Foundation Liverpool. Concurrently, Chun’s new series Simultan will be introduced.

Korean artist Kyungwoo Chun who lives in Seoul and Bremen is known for his large-size portrait series characterized by blurred facial features and an almost painterly effect, achieved by extremely long exposure times. The artist’s use of photography and video counters our expectations towards these media: While his photographic portraits document longer periods of time, in his video works time seems to have been arrested. The blur resulting from long exposure times defies the notion of photography as an objective medium that catches a specific moment. These works capture the time spent, in dialogue or silence, between the artist and his model, confront the claim of preservation with the danger of disappearance, and dissolve the outside appearance to enable a glimpse of what’s inside.

Most works in this exhibition are part of the large-scale project Thousands, which might be characterized as a venture of genealogical research. In times of globalization and individualism it reflects on historic roots and the relation of unity and diversity, thematizes emotions of pride and affiliation, and investigates migration as a socio-cultural phenomenon.

The exhibition is completed by works from the series Simultan, which are presented to the public for the first time. Always arranged in diptychs, these photographs show groups of people in dialogue, taken simultaneously from two different perspectives and thus allowing for a twofold view on the same situation. Thus, these works thematize the often one-sided and selective perception of events and the distorting character of our memory.

*** New Work ***

An Exhibition of encaustic on wood by Kevin Ghiglione.

My life has been a journey of just artwork - including printmaking,
film and design. My large paintings are the exercising of all the elements
of artmaking. It's like a summation or tallying of all the elements - brought
together as a kind of "visual thesis".
